With the possibility of Mount Spurr erupting, many residents have questions about what to expect and how to prepare. While we can’t predict exactly when or if an eruption will occur, being informed and ready can help minimize potential risks.
Where is Mount Spurr?
Mount Spurr is located about 80 miles west of Anchorage across the Cook Inlet.
What are the potential impacts of an eruption?
A volcanic eruption can result in ashfall, which can affect air quality, travel, and utilities. Ash can be hazardous when inhaled, cause damage to electronics and vehicles, and make roads slippery. Additionally, heavy ash accumulation can impact HVAC systems.
How can I prepare my home?
- Keep windows and doors closed to prevent ash from getting inside.
- Have extra air filters on hand for forced air units. These are available in our Self Help Center.
How will Maintenance respond?
Our Maintenance Team will assess ashfall conditions. If necessary, they will distribute extra air filters for homes with forced air units and work to protect exterior vents.
Where can I find updates?
JBER provides emergency information through JBER Connect and the JBER website. We also encourage residents to monitor alerts from the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) and the National Weather Service (NWS).
